Guelph
Advertiser 28 August 1851
Our Railway
On Monday last a joint Meeting of the Councils
and Railway Committee for the Town and Township of Guelph was
held at the Court House, in this Town, take into consideration
the present state of affairs, and arrange for future action. It
being understood that, the whole would act in conjunction for
the future, Mr. Sheriff Grange was elected Chairman, and Mr. John
Smith, Secretary.
A letter was read from James Webster, Esq., at
present in Toronto, giving information respecting the movements
of the advocates of the line in that city, and the desire that
was felt for combined action, whereupon it was
-Resolved -- That Messrs Hodgert, Clarke, S.
Smith, (Reeve) J. Smith, Hubbard, Thurtell, Harland, Wright, McCres,
and Grange, be a deputation to meet one from Toronto, at Georgetown,
on such day as may be hereafter arranged.
A sub-committee was appointed to obtain statistical
information respecting the business of the Town.
It had been suggested, that as a meeting will
be held at Georgetown in concert with the Toronto gentlemen, a
general turn-out from Guelph would give evidence to the letter,
as well as the people along the line, of the feeling in this locality
in favor of the immediate construction of the Road. We have heard
several gentlemen express their intention to accompany the deputation,
and would suggest that there should be a general move. The meeting
will probably be held on Tuesday next.
